Weatherproof versus watertight doors on yachts

Watertight doors are designed to prevent the ingress of water from inside and outside the yacht, ensuring that the integrity of the adjacent space of the yacht is not lost. Watertight doors are located on the lower deck and are designed to open and close automatically, with manual assistance. A remote signal of the opening or closing status of a yacht's watertight doors is required by law.

It is crucial that the watertight compartments can withstand a large water pressure, as is the case with a large water leak. Thanks to the watertight closure, the leak cannot spread and the yacht remains buoyant. Because this watertight seal is so important to the safety of the yacht, classification is required in most cases. Most Explorer yachts are built with watertight compartments and doors separating the lower deck areas to minimize the risk of sinking if you hit something in the water.

A weathertight yacht door is designed to withstand only water pressure from the outside.

Typical places where weather-tight closures are found are above the waterline, for example, on the deck or in the wheelhouse. Weather-tight doors are designed to withstand the weather conditions at sea. They can be submerged for short periods of time, such as when they are hit by a high wave. In addition, these doors/hatches have a fire and smoke protection function. Weather protection doors are found on the main and upper decks of most Explorer yachts and provide additional security.
