Ship equipment Part 2: Cleat, windlass, shackle, block and fender - functions and applications
Boats and yachts are equipped with a variety of equipment that performs specific functions and makes the sailing experience safer and more comfortable. Here we present some important pieces of equipment used on boats and yachts: Cleat, windlass, shackle, block and fender. These elements play a crucial role in various maneuvers and together contribute to safety, efficiency and comfort on board.
Cleat
A cleat is a T-shaped or horn-shaped fastener attached to the deck to secure ropes and lines. Cleats are commonly used for mooring, guy and berthing and are available in a variety of sizes and materials.
Anchor windlass
The windlass is specially designed for raising and lowering the anchor. It has a horizontal or vertical drum on which the anchor chain is wound. Windlasses can be manual, electric or hydraulic and are essential to perform the anchor maneuver safely and efficiently.
Fender
Fenders are protective pads that are hung between the vessel and a quay, mooring or other vessel to prevent damage to the vessel's hull or mooring. They absorb shocks and prevent scratches or dents while mooring or lying in port.
These additional pieces of equipment complement the functions of bollards, capstans and winches and together contribute to safety, efficiency and convenience on boats and yachts.
