Furniture production for steel explorer yachts - quality meets modern design

The interior design of a yacht reflects the owner's values, priorities and aesthetics. A study from the United Kingdom shows that furniture production is often the second largest cost in yacht manufacturing after engine equipment (Ilhan 2019). Given the amount of labor and craftsmanship required, it is not surprising that furniture production is a significant cost in yacht building.

There are three common methods of furniture production for yachts: the on-site method, the mock-up method, and the computer-assisted method (Ergul 2017). Bering Yachts prefers the computer-assisted method, which involves creating a 3D model and presenting an electronic version of the layout to the customer. Once the design is approved, the project goes into production immediately, which saves time and keeps furniture production in line with the boatbuilding process.

Over the last twenty years, the interior design of yachts has changed radically. Today, modern vessels look more aesthetically like comfortable, land-based homes (Campolongo 2017). To meet these modern visual habits, Bering uses fine woods such as teak, walnut, oak, and beech. These materials are processed together with composites and boatbuilding plywood, which is particularly durable thanks to waterproof bonding and water-repellent surface treatment.

The challenge is to use materials and furniture that are both homey and nautical. At Bering, materials are selected that are aesthetically pleasing, lightweight, durable and safe. They must comply with International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines to meet the fire safety requirements of SOLAS 1974 (Safety for Life at Sea). All materials used by Bering Yachts are fully compliant with these regulations.

Furniture construction at Bering Yachts involves eight steps, starting with the initial design of the project by interior designers and engineers. In the following steps, materials are selected, cut, processed, assembled and finally installed on the yacht. Each step is subject to careful quality control.

To work in furniture manufacturing at Bering, employees must be experienced, knowledgeable, hardworking and detail-oriented. The furniture and furnishings produced at Bering are integral to the design, comfort and functionality of the yachts. They add style and uniqueness to any space on board, creating a luxurious, homey ambiance in keeping with modern visual habits.
